Melville is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Melville is located on Long Island and is bordered by Smithtown to the north, Islip to the east, and Brookhaven Town to the west.
The town was named after Joseph H. Hauppauge, a local landowner. Much of the early history of the town revolves around its mills; six mills were in operation by 1800. In 1851, what would become known as the Long Island Rail Road reached Melville and spurred development in the area.
